Qualification Individuals (CI) – Rope and Hoop - Day 1

MOSCOW (RUS), FIG Office, September 20, 2010: Spectators and judges saw more than 130 routines today on Rope and Hoop as the Individual qualification round and Team competition got underway in the Olympiyski Indoor Arena. Locals fired up the gymnasts and the Russian competitors, who took to the floor at the end of the day, relishing in the special attention lavished on them by their fans.

Bulgaria’s Silviya Miteva gave the first highlight of the day featuring an interesting routine on Rope, well-choreographed to the sounds of traditional music and enhanced by a leotard in traditional style. Her score of 26.400 ranked her first for the moment.

Also on Rope and with 26.375 points, Joanna Mitrosz took a provisional second place and ranked her Polish Team first (74.450), just ahead of Bulgaria (74.100).
Uzbek gymnasts impressed on Hoop this morning with Ulyana Trofimova taking the lead with 26.275 points and the Team in third for now (73.400).

Israel also made their first appearance on Hoop in today’s morning session, placing Neta Rivkin on top of the field (26.475) and Irina Risenson (26.350) in front of Trofimova in second. As a Team, Israel took the lead over Poland, Bulgaria and Uzbekistan.

Anna Alyabyeva of Kazakhstan pleased her fans with dramatic and flawlessly executed choreography on Hoop, which was rewarded with 26.900 points and the lead!

In the afternoon, the tension rose as gymnasts from Belarus, Russia and the Ukraine entered the competition on Rope, and Azerbaijani contenders performed on Hoop.

Melitina Staniouta (BLR) blundered handling the rope, which meant deductions in Execution, but her 26.450 still placed her first ahead of Miteva.

Elegant Anna Gurbanova (AZE) enjoyed enthusiastic support from the grandstands; she scored a 26.450 on Hoop.

Yana Lukonina, the first Russian gymnast to enter the competition, gave a flawless routine on Rope (27.775) that was topped only by her compatriots Evgenia Kanaeva (28.550) and Daria Kondakova (28.350). The Russian trio set the bar high for competitors still to perform on this apparatus tomorrow.

Ever smiling Aliya Garayeva (AZE) did not disappoint her fans tonight. She showed a lively and clean routine that put her into the lead on Hoop (27.275); a position she held until the end of today’s competitions.

Accompanied by exuberant cries throughout the hall, the Ukrainian competitors made their appearance with Alina Maksymenko (UKR) being most successful, scoring a 27.100; provisional place 4 for her.

Natalia Godunko (UKR), who returned to competition here in Moscow after having interrupted her career following the 2008 Olympic Games, gave another demonstration of her distinctive style. She was the last competitor today, and her 26.100 meant a provisional rank 9 on Rope.

Russia is currently leading the Team ranking ahead of Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Israel.

The Individual competition that continues until September 23 will determine the Team rankings, the top 24 gymnasts qualifying for the Individual All-around Final and the top eight qualifiers per apparatus advancing to the Apparatus Finals.
